The name means “the family of the woman Tenai” in Swahili, Tanai being a variant on the Afrikaans name “Tenai.” Queen Sjerrie Tenai ruled here for many years as her husband and consort King Tenai ruled in Sagthied to the south.
The Tenai expedition came from southern Africa, up the Missouri to these mountains, pursuing rumours of gold. The first mixed race Southern African expedition, it was also the most successful.
