During the Air War between Marten and Loess, the fields of Marten were subjected to air assault by corpsedusters. The intent was to kill off the national symbol of Marten—the Purple Martin, a bird that eats almost its weight in mosquitoes every day. Mad Dag Hawkinton was the leading Ace for the Loess and his record of victory was further burnished by this campaign. In a period of 3 weeks, 200,000 songbirds were killed, including most of the Purple Martins.But, just when he was on the verge of delivering the coup de grace to the ecological infrastructure of Marten with a direct chemical hit on their apiary complex in Earling, he was killed in a crash. It was a devastating blow for the Loessian Military, because he was the only pilot skilled enough to implement many of their specific tactics. Ironically, sabotage has not been ruled out as motive, because some within his organization had ties to farmers concerned that the lack of bees would harm Marten as well as Loess.
