Neighbor to the lichen gwome of [Big Stone; trans], Fljot is perhaps most famous for being home to clontarves, masses of abandoned cats and dogs who roll around the countryside like a kind of squirming furry knot. When the clontarf hits a stream or river, the water may be unusable for days.
It is unknown why so many pets return here to Fljot, instead of to their homes. Some have speculated that pets who disliked their masters, but feel an impulse to return somewhere, can somehow sense the animals that have gone before them. Others blame magnetic anomalies. Some speculate the lichen gwome itself plays some sort of role in the disorientation.
