Though these counties do not touch today, there is evidence that the flatlanders originated in rKansas District.

Flatland and its Artisans

Today, we take for granted that Flatland is a 3-Dimensional nation with depth as well as length and height, but for much of the Parallel California era Flatland was width of a single line. It was a Nation without dimension. In fact when you see it on our map today, we are choosing to show it after the Great Devil’s Den Earthquake. Through careful comparison of the impacted rock formations, the Great Devil’s Den Earthquake has been estimated to have been about 175 times more powerful than the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and was felt all over California. The records of Jefferson Nation 400 miles away to the far North describe a public assembly suddenly disrupted by the surging earth and a tsunami caused by this same temblor in the Salton Sea in Galilee (South One True God’s Only Nation) is believed by some in the Church of the California Christ to explain the parting of the waters as Moses led his people from Anza Borrego into the Orocopia Mountains. (Others, of course, reject this as being incompatible with the divine intervention spoken of in the Bible of the CCC.)

As an art historical footnote it is interesting to note that even today, the artisans of Flatland are best known for their mosaics and tilework. Even 2 dimensional painting has been of little interest to them because it portrays depth. But the ornate and lush geometricl patterns they are able to create are truly remarkable (see the image above).

The faultline for this quake was the border between Tehachapi and Gushuzhigua (Kern and Fresno counties in linear California). This border was not any normal border. Travelers often spoke of seeing a vision, not unlike a mirage, as they crossed this border. If one stopped and looked at it closely, one seemed to see ghostly geometric shapes, in quality not unlike the translucent shapes one sees after rubbing ones eyes. The border area in which this strange curtain fell was in the midst of a desolate and dry area and this transparent sheet plunged almost endlessly into the earth and effortlessly up into the sky. Travellers traveling up Frontage Road described how it disappeared into the distance towards the coastal range near the town of Parkfield, famous for the Parkfield Bulge. Some people are convinced it extended eastwards as well all the way to the stateline. But there was nevertheless a huge hole in it many yards wide permitting passage through a gate like structure. By common agreement it was never touched and rarely spoken of-some said that agreement had been made Fei Li himself when he arrived in Gengdi and communicated with the spirits in the cloth without dimension. To learn more about the history of this transition, we had a two part series in our newsletter which communicates some of these important ideas:A history of Flatland (from which some of the above was adapted) and then a more detailed discussion of the Great Devil’s Den Earthquake.
