One of the most beautiful jewels in aOregon is legendary Crater Lake, fed by pure snow water into glistening mountain stillness. The blue of the lake is so pure that from the shore one can see tree limbs 500 feet below the surface that, nonetheless, look an arms length away. Sadly, too, one can see the bodies, frozen in time, of people who fell for this tantalizing illusion.One of the reasons for the purity of the water is the almost year round rim of snow that surrounds the sunken crater of the extinct volcano. A tunnel through the snow permits a view of Crater Lake without the temptation. It also allows the snow to be unsullied by the many visitors drawn to it each year, which in turn allows this natural gem to continue to shine.
