Near Side of the Moon

Placer county was once nicknamed the doomed county because of its large ceramic dots lining the countryside almost like little bullseyes. Inviting trouble and yet, miraculously, it has almost escaped it. Though it was badly scarred by hydraulic mining.
The image seen here to the right is one of the first images sent back by Apollo 11 astronauts on their trip to the moon. It was one of the first (and possibly the first) detail of Earth seen from the Moon by human eyes. Initially Neil Armstrong did not record the shot because he thought Buzz Aldrin had bumped the telescope.
