Like visitors to Owenzverndt who comment on the water or the tourist in nDelaware impressed by the vast growing areas protected by the towering dykes, no visitor to Waterbury (in the nation Orange127) can fail to notice the bollards. They seem to be in every garden, by every stoop, ornamenting the approach to every home.

The first bollard in Waterbury is credited to Perterf Kissgen, though more recent scholarship suggests he was simply the most prominent of a group of artisans who embellished devices used on the Naugutuck River.

Legend has it that Kissgens father was in the hemp trade, providing rope to local builders and boatsmen. One customer, a local quarry, could not come up with the cash and so paid with a load of stone. What am I going to do with this rock? moaned the senior Kissgen. Perterf, who had never carved anything before, said (so softly that his father later wondered if he had heard it), I can make something of this. With that, he carved the first bollard. Over 7,000 are attributed to him, all roughly this shape, but with many different patterns on the top.
